Why I built MiVisaGuide

I'm Sanjay Shah. I immigrated to the United States in 1985 — and over the next 40 years I did every one of my own immigration applications, and my family's, without ever hiring an attorney.

Practical-training visa, H-1B, labor certification, green card, citizenship — then I sponsored my wife and family the same way. I'm not a lawyer. But I learned to read the rules, and I learned that most common visa applications are entirely rule-based: fill the form out correctly and no one can deny you arbitrarily.

The real problem isn't the forms — it's the fear. Tens of millions of people immigrate legally, and the system is so expensive and so complicated that even the most educated live with the anxiety that one mistake could cost them everything. Attorneys charge $750 to $2,000 to prepare a single common form — a form you can often complete yourself, with the right guidance.

Before 1993, you either did your taxes by hand or paid a CPA by the hour. Then TurboTax took the mystery out of it — and today it's a flat fee. There has never been a TurboTax for immigration. That's what I'm building.
