Current Processing Times

EAD processing times vary depending on the category and service center handling your case. As of early 2026, most OPT applications are processed within 2-5 months. STEM extensions may take 3-6 months.

How to Check Your Case Status

After filing, you will receive a receipt notice (Form I-797C) with a receipt number starting with "IOE" or the service center code. Use this number at uscis.gov/case-status to check your application status.

When to Contact USCIS

If your case has been pending beyond the normal processing time, you can submit a case inquiry through the USCIS Contact Center or file an e-Request. If you have an urgent situation (e.g., job offer with start date), you may be eligible for an expedite request.

Expedite Requests

USCIS considers expedite requests for severe financial loss, emergencies, humanitarian reasons, or nonprofit organizations. Document your reason thoroughly and submit through the USCIS contact center.
