STEM OPT Extension: Your Complete Document Checklist
Overview
The 24-month STEM OPT extension is available to F-1 students who have completed a degree in a STEM field listed on the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List. This extension requires additional documentation compared to initial OPT.
Document Checklist
Here is the complete list of documents you need for your STEM OPT extension application. Required items include Form I-765, Form I-983 (Training Plan signed by you and your employer), your updated I-20 with STEM extension recommendation, current EAD card (front and back), passport biographical page, I-94 record, two passport photos, and proof that your employer is enrolled in E-Verify.
E-Verify Requirement
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify to qualify for STEM OPT. Ask your employer for their E-Verify Company ID number — you will need it on your I-983 Training Plan.
Common Mistakes
The most frequent errors include filing after your current OPT EAD expires, not having a signed I-983, and the employer not being in E-Verify. Also ensure your degree CIP code matches the STEM Designated Degree List.
