New for F-1 & J-1 students

“Duration of status” is changing

Under a DHS final rule effective September 15, 2026, new F-1, J-1, and I visa holders are admitted for a fixed period — the length of your program, or 4 years, whichever is shorter — instead of open-ended “duration of status” (D/S). To stay past that date, you would file Form I-539 (with biometrics) to extend.

Already an F-1 student in the U.S.?

You are generally grandfathered: if you are in the U.S. on D/S on September 15, 2026, you keep it and do not need to file anything right now. That changes mainly if you travel abroad and re-enter — a new entry gives you a fixed end date. Also new: the grace period after your program ends is shortening from 60 days to 30.

Based on the DHS final rule published in the Federal Register July 17, 2026 (effective September 15, 2026). Immigration rules change — confirm the current version at uscis.gov and with your DSO before acting. We will add Form I-539 to our tools as this takes effect.
